“These information packets and the event at the Orleans Center for Aging were organized by two Americorps Volunteers, Cynthia Slemmer and Conor Terry. They started the presentation as a side project, but they found a big need and it became their capstone project of the year.”
“The President’s Award, which is given to a person or family who is a strong supporter of the Pantry, was presented to the Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod. AmeriCorps has supported the Pantry over the past six years, working primarily in the organization’s 9,000-square-foot garden. Each year, a team helps to open and close the garden, preparing for planting, aligning irrigation and general clean up. The award was accepted by Daniel Schell, program coordinator AmeriCorps Cape Cod.”

AmeriCorps Cape Cod hosted its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service project Monday. The focus of the project was a Cape-wide food drive Monday with collection bins set up previously at various grocery stores. The food was collected Monday and taken to Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in South Yarmouth where it was sorted and boxed up to be delivered to local food pantries. Volunteers were also sent to local food pantries to help with their projects such as general clean ups. Big Brothers Big Sisters, Shea’s Youth Basketball Association and YMCA Teen Achievers were among the volunteer groups that participated in the day of service.
